this album welcomes two new members into the infinite ape family. after jon crompton moved to new york in late 2013, i invited tony to join us to renew the trio format, and he brought an incredible wealth of ideas and experience. i first met christian while studying at banff in 2012, where we played with jon and many other amazing people. when he announced a brief australian tour this year, i saw the opportunity for an exciting collaboration between near and distant friends.

civil languages is the complete and unabridged result of an afternoon of improvisation. tony and sam hadn’t met christian before we got to the studio, but the atmosphere proved fertile from the outset. with niko’s expertise, we were able to set up in a single room and play without headphones, and almost two hours of music unfolded as though it had been waiting for this moment of release.

it was enriching, exhausting, honest and revelatory. i look forward to it happening again.
